Speaker Bio
Jacob Brey is a fourth-generation farmer and co-owner of Brey Cycle Farm LLC, a dairy farm in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., along with his brother, Tony. The farm has been in the Brey family since 1904. Along with their wives and a team of dedicated employees, they have grown the farm from 100 milking cows and 500 acres to 1,400 milking cows and 1,700 acres. In addition to raising their own youngstock, they custom raise heifers for other farms. They are passionate about Registered Holsteins and place an emphasis on improving the genetics in their herd using embryo transfer and genomics. The Breys also raise Holstein/Angus animals from birth to finish. Through Brey Family Beef, they bring quality meat and their farm story directly to customers through an on-farm store and enhanced presence in the community. Since buying the farm in 2016, Jacob and Tony have increased their emphasis on conservation. Brey Cycle Farm is a founding member of Peninsula Pride Farms, a farmer-led conservation group in their community, as well as a demonstration farm through the Door-Kewaunee Demonstration Farm Network. Cover crops, no-till, planting into green and low-disturbance manure injection are all strategies used to improve soil health and protect water quality. In 2020, 160 acres of land was converted to pasture for managed grazing of pregnant heifers and beef cattle. The Breys continue to evaluate new practices to implement that make environmental and economic sense. Jacob serves on the local fire board, Door Co. Land Conservation Committee, Farm Service Agency Committee and is vice-president of Peninsula Pride Farms. He enjoys judging dairy cattle and has coached the Door Co. 4-H and FFA teams. The Breys enjoy hosting field days and farm tours for fellow farmers and community members.
